With the purpose of addressing issues related to agricultural activities and providing good management practice on how to avoid polluting water, air and soil, this Decree establishes certain practices to be applied by farmers and others involved in agricultural activities, named Codes of Good Agricultural Practice. The Codes aim at: the sustainable management of agricultural lands and natural resources, the protection and safeguarding of rural landscape and its specific characteristics, farmers and consumers health protection. For the achievement of the afore-mentioned objectives, the Codes intervene in the following agricultural activities (Chapter A, articles 1-9): ground treatment; shifting cultivation, crop rotation system; fertilization; management of water resources; plant protection; management of autochthonous flora; crop harvesting; management of crop surplus; waste management. Shifting cultivation regards only the annual, arable and horticulture crops. All other activities mentioned concern all types of crops. The Codes of Good Agricultural Practice concern, also, the following stock breeding activities (Chapter B, articles 10-13): pasture lands management; animal welfare; management of waste of animal origin. Moreover, regarding certain regions or areas mentioned in Chapter C “Special cases” (articles 14-16), additional Codes shall apply. The last Chapter D (articles 17-21) deals with the implementation of the Codes, controls and sanctions.
