The protection of agricultural land is an important issue because the area of food production per capita will be decreasing by several estimations in the next decades. The planning measures to ensure the preservation of valuable arable land are among the objectives of county plans in Estonia.
The study has been conducted in Rostov region since 2009. The object of research is black southern chernozems (zonal soils) and alkali soils that make up the integrated soil cover with more than 35 % alkali soils.
Vast and beautiful grassland landscapes in the Aso Kuju National Park have been maintained by human activities e.g. controlled burning, pasturage and mowing. However, the aging of local farmers and the stagnation of livestock industry make such grassland management increasingly difficult.
