This document provides guidance on applying the ELMO tool. It is primarily targeted at researchers seeking to collect information about the social and economic drivers of land use decisions, and wishing to investigate farmers’ sustainable land management preferences and trade-offs. As illustrated on the facing page, ELMO is organised around three basic questions, and entails 10 steps. Although these steps follow a logical, iterative process, it should be emphasised that the tool can be modified and adapted to the specific needs and context within which it is being applied.

Recommendations are given on the var. and cultural practices used in cassava cultivation in the Colombian Llanos Orientales. Initially, soil acidity and low fertility were believed to be the major constraints; however, trials have indicated that diseases (bacterioses, superelongation, and anthracnose), pests (mites, thrips, mealybugs, and lace bugs), and the long summer season are obstacles more difficult to overcome. Var. should be selected not only for yields and resistance to the above diseases and pests but also for final end use of roots.

    Kenya, Eastern Africa

This paper describes a novel effort at developing index-based insurance for locationaveraged livestock mortality as a means to fill an important void in the risk management instruments available to protect the main asset of pastoralists in the arid and semi-arid lands of Kenya, where insurance markets are effectively absent and uninsured risk exposure is a main cause of the existence of poverty traps.
