This study was done to establish relationships between management and sanitary practices on ewe dairy farms and the quality of milk produced. For this purpose, a survey was carried out on 118 farms and a total of 121,117 animals in the Castilla-La Mancha region (Southeast Spain) in which the veterinarians of the Association of Sanitary Defence participated. Flocks varied considerably in size, ranging from 120-7,200 sheep, with an average milking period lasting 3-5 months and milk yields of between 50 and 150 litres per lactation by mechanical systems on 75.0% of farms.

Nineteen microsatellite markers were used to fingerprint a set of 19 potato landraces from the island of La Palma (Canary Islands). These landraces represent relicts of early introductions from South America, although most are commonly cultivated by local farmers. The SSR primers detected 62 polymorphisms, 13 of which were present in all landraces. Several accession- and group-specific markers were detected. Jaccard similarity coefficients were estimated from the molecular data and UPGMA cluster analysis was performed. Some cultivars with related common names clustered together.

The effects of subsidies on the development of organic farming (OF) in the Czech Republic and in some selected EU countries are analysed in this article. The level of subsidies for OF in the Czech Republic is continuously increasing. In 1998, the total amount of subsidies was 48 million CZK, whereas in 2004, it increased to nearly 277 million CZK. The increase of subsidies led to an increase in the number of organic farms as well as the area under OF.

The process of agricultural abandonment has been taking place for the last decades all around Europe. This process has special effect on mountain livestock farming, as it is the case of that of Catalan Pyrenees, which is characterised by an extensive management of the herd between the alpine grasslands in summer and the hay meadow of the lower valleys in winter. The process of agricultural abandonment, apart from the obvious closing down of the exploitations, also implies a gradual decrease of the management intensity of the farming exploitation.

Changes of vegetal cover in the Aragonese western Pyrenees are shown throughout the last 50 years. The evolution is characterized by a generalised revegetation process with an advance of shrubs and forests. The medium and low slopes show the most intense revegetation as a consequence of the agricultural abandonment and the decrease of the livestock pressure. Nevertheless, few vegetation changes are recorded in cultivated lands and the pastures located above timberline.

Semen was collected from 10 Black Castellana roosters and the classic sperm variables (ejaculate volume, sperm concentration and sperm motility) examined. In addition, the hypo-osmotic swelling test was used to investigate sperm cell membrane integrity, and acidic aniline blue staining used to screen for morphological abnormalities (including acrosome integrity) and to examine the condensation status of the chromatin. The latter was also examined by Gram staining. Large and small semen volumes were associated high and low sperm concentrations respectively (R2=0.04, P>0.05).
