Soil health assessment of farmers’ fields in watershed villages in Medak district, Andhra Pradesh, India showed widespread deficiencies of sulfur (S), boron (B), and zinc (Zn) in addition to organic carbon and phosphorus (P). Participatory on-farm trials on soil test-based application of deficient Zn, B, and S along with nitrogen (N) and P during 2009 to 2012 significantly increased crop yields over farmers’ practice (FP)—by 31% to 45% in chickpea, 15% to 16% in cotton, 12% to 15% in paddy, and 8% to 9% in sugarcane.

Image segmentation is a basic and important procedure in object-based classification of remote-sensing data. This study presents an approach to multi-scale optimal segmentation (OS), given that single-scale segmentation may not be the most suitable approach to map a variety of land-cover types characterized by various spatial structures; it objectively measures the appropriate segmentation scale for each object at various scales and projects them onto a single layer. A 1.8 m spatial resolution Worldview-2 image was used to perform successive multi-scale segmentations.

A new locally-adaptive image classification method LAGMA (Locally-Adaptive Global Mapping Algorithm) has been developed to meet requirements of land cover mapping over large areas using remote-sensing data. The LAGMA involves the grid-based supervised image classification using classes’ features estimated locally in classified pixels’ surrounding from spatially distributed reference data.

Potential data sets for landcover classification, such as Landsat (or pre-processed data such as the National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD)), are often too coarse for fine-scale research needs or are cost-prohibitive (Quickbird, Ikonos and Geoeye). Repeated attempts at classifying high spatial resolution data, National Agricultural Imagery Program (NAIP) imagery, based on traditional techniques, such as a maximum likelihood supervised classification, have failed to produce a product with sufficient accuracy.

The methods and approaches selected in a restoration project depend on the degree of ecosystem degradation and on future land use plans. Programs of monitoring and evaluation must therefore compare restoration progress and effectiveness relative to untreated conditions and to target conditions, particularly with respect to the attributes and functions essential to land use objectives. It is usually not feasible to directly monitor all important forest attributes and functions, so a few indicators must be selected.

The land surface models used in numerical weather forecasts and hydrological applications rely on the accuracy of land cover maps available from satellite remote sensing to simulate the energy and water balance at the surface of the Earth. While the impact of classification accuracy on land surface simulations has already been reported, little attention has been paid on the consequences of land cover map uncertainty driven by geolocation accuracy.

A dam's construction always imposes some risks to the environment. In this article, the environmental risks of the Polrood dam, located in a northern province of Iran, during its construction phase, were identified, ranked, and evaluated. The risk factors were initially identified by Delphi questionnaire and then rated using the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). Subsequently, the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) was applied to classify the risk factors into four major categories, and Expert Choice software was used to weight them.

In order to identify sustainable management solutions for small-scale farmer agroecosystems, a better understanding of these dynamic forest–farmland systems, existing farming and forestry strategies, and farmer perspectives is important. We examined the relationship between agricultural land use patterns and farmers’ practices and identified existing and potential characteristics of healthy agroecosystems at local scale in the context of village communities in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

The pattern of soil respiration and its responsible factors are still unclear in subalpine ecosystems. In this study, we used a static chamber system to measure soil respiration in a primary Abies fabri (Masters) Craib forest, a secondary A. fabri forest and a clear-cut land on Gongga Mountain, east of Tibetan Plateau in China. Our results showed there were substantial diurnal and temporal variations in these three subalpine ecosystems. The diurnal coefficient of variation (CV) of soil respiration was lowest in primary forest (20.5%), and highest in clear-cut land (40.4%).

The Chinese government started implementation of the Grain for Green Project (GGP) in 1999, aiming to convert cropland to forestland to mitigate soil erosion problems in areas across the country. Although the project has generated substantial environmental benefits, such as erosion reduction, carbon sequestration and water quality improvements, the magnitude of these benefits has not yet been well quantified due to the lack of location-specific data describing the afforestation efforts.
