    This study, which looked at 72 in traditional Salers system, shows there is a correlation between the use made of fields and the characteristics of these fields. The geographical characteristics and the use made of over 1,500 fields (cut and/or grazed fields) were described, mainly based on the statements made by farmers. Three groups of fields were identified (only cut fields, cut and grazed fields, only grazed fields) and in a second step, 15 types of fields uses were identified and described.

    Forestry plantations should be regarded as an alternative sustainable land-use system in degraded savannah areas. They contribute to the maintenance of productive processes in degraded soils that are of economic importance for local inhabitants; in addition, in the ecological sense, timber and non-timber products from planted forests reduce the exploitation pressure on native forests. Eucalyptus plantations on degraded savannahs in the northern Brazilian Amazon may help to reduce exploitation pressure on native forests.

    Plant health is a key condition for a sustainable land use and rural economy. Drawing on a Rural Economy and Land Use (RELU)-funded project on the growing risk of plant diseases in the UK, current and future challenges to plant health are discussed. It is well recognized that farmers have an important role in shaping plant health policies at a time of major structural changes in agricultural industries. However, the role of consumers has also much potential to improve sustainability of plant disease management options.
