    Through six themes: tenure policy; water management; sustainable housing; waste treatment and recycling practices; urban agriculture; and construction practices, nine case studies address diverse urban sustainability challenges facing cities in Peru, Senegal, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, the Philippines, Thailand, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Developed in partnership with low-income city dwellers, the authors propose small changes in practice and structure, which can create more balanced, healthy, and sustainable habitats. The book offers insights into both theory and practice.

The project seeks to understand the different modes and outcomes of water governance in selected polders and the role that communities play in such governance.

    Water is one of the most critical problems in Bangladesh. The Government of Bangladesh (GoB) acknowledges water as a finite resource with tremendous importance for the environment and livelihoods in its National Water Policy (GoB, 1999). The National Water Policy provides a comprehensive policy framework for pressing water issues in Bangladesh such as river basin planning, water rights and allocation, delineation of public and private domains, water supply and sanitation, preservation of the natural environment and the developmental concerns of fisheries, navigation and agriculture.

    Current land management approaches focus on achieving ecological resilience for natural resources and biological diversity, and socioeconomic resilience for the people who depend on the land for their livelihoods and wellbeing. In the Hindu Kush Himalayan region, landscapes extend across national boundaries and their effective management requires cooperation among the countries sharing the transboundary area, particularly in light of the impacts being experienced from a wide range of drivers of change, including climate change.

    Khulna, the third largest metropolitan city (46 km) of Bangladesh, is vulnerable to climate change and unplanned urbanization process. The city has been identified as one of the 15 most climate change vulnerable cities of the world. This study was conducted to assess how urban and peri-urban residents of Khulna have been affected by the Mayur River through its use and abuse, and to explore adaptation measures. To complete the study, primary data was collected through field surveys, stakeholders' consultation, focused group discussion, key informantinterview and water quality analysis.
