Indeed, time available for drafting this report and the data available to us did not allow scrutinizing certain issues relating to the development of river and lake basins. This report made use of data contained in another report prepared in 1989 and supplemented by other data gathered in the process of drafting this report.

The rate of degradation and depletion of natural resources in Africa has been accelerated as a result of the increasing population pressure. The lack of reliable quantitative and qualitative information on vegetation cover and land use at national and regional levels has been the major limiting factor in development planning, sustainable management of agriculture and forestry resources, the food security early warning systems, environmental monitoring as well as in biodiversity assessment and protection.

The main functions of the Department of Surveys and Lands (DSL) are the recording and supply of land, mapping, survey and remote sensing information. In addition the department provides professional services and advice on these subjects, mainly to other government Departments and aid projects. It also does compulsory acquisition work for parastatal organizations and provides an information and sales service on its products to the public.

Depuis un peu plus de vingt ans, le Gouvernement guinéen multiplie des efforts pour faire aboutir le projet MIFERGUI, qui vise l'exploitation de 420 millions de tonnes de réserves prouvées de fer du gisement de Pierré Richaud, dans les monts Nimba. L'une des contraintes- et pas des moindres- à sa réalisation, est la préservation de l'environnement de cette région de la Guinée, dont une partie a été classée patrimoine mondial, en raison de la richesse de la faune et de la faune dont certaines espèces sont très rares au monde.
